The first version of this instrument was developed by Wesley R. Burr in 1980 and was called Marital Inventories. It was developed in 1985 by the Family Life Office of the Archdiocese of Omaha and is considered to be one of the most popular and effective tools for marriage preparation. There are four advantages in using FOCCUS: 1. FOCCUS reflects the values and ideals of a sacramental marriage as taught by the Roman Catholic Church. 2. A couple can learn about the strengths and areas for growth in their relationship within a short period of time. 3. The questionnaire covers 15 areas in marriage. 4. FOCCUS has been scientifically proved to be valid and reliable.
